Takehana

Upon arriving on Phase 3 of Autocity, we had little trouble finding a for a
spot at the car park. Then it came down to choosing on where to eat.
Isshin was widely criticized by Fred and Jordan. We wouldn't come
all the way to BM to eat Nando's or Seoul Garden for that matter.
Tao was a possible choice at 1 point, but was quickly discarded
for its price.

We ended up in Takehana. The place was packed. Actually, almost every
food outlet around there was packed..it's a Saturday anyway.

The Outside.
Urgh, it was raining and it
was dark. And my n70 isn't
really that great at night.
It reads 'Japanese Ramen
& Rice Restaurant' if you
can't read.

Fred.
We were bored while waiting
for our table. So, Fred made
a homo erotic pose with the
queue paper issued to us.
Did I say homo erotic?

Sam with girlfriend.
And the queue paper found
its way to Sam and his
girlfriend....

Jia Yit, Raggy & Sam
The paper found its way to Raggy.
Fallen in deep love with the paper,
Sam unwittingly broke up with his
girlfriend to confess his feelings
for the paper. Sam is seen here
trying to snatch the paper off
Raggy. Jia Yit joins in the fun.

Me.

In less than 10 minutes, we
were seated and began
ordering. I forgot to take a
picture of the interior, but
I have to say it's nice. There
were mini tv on the walls
for the smaller tables.

California & Unagi Temaki
Price: RM5++ , RM8++
I had no idea how each of
them taste like. Try to notice
the bottom part of the roll.
I wonder if it drips when
you eat them.
(To be updated)

Fried Anchovies
Price : Free
Each of us is given a small serving
of fried anchovies. I don't see
them listed in the bill, so I guess
it's free in some sense.
It's soaked with sugar or honey.
Kinda nice.

Pan Fried Gyoza
Price : RM9.00++
It says pan fried and looks
grilled but it taste like
boiled gyoza instead. The
filling was moderate but the
skin was soaked with oil.
Yuck.

Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen
Price : RM13.00++
Jordan and Raggy ordered this.
Each with different spiciness level.
The big patch of sea weed in the
middle looks awkward to me.
Jordan said Yataimura's was
way better.
Raggy said it was plain in taste.
Nothing special. He made a
comparison with 'Maggi Mee'.
When there's a comparison of
RM13 ramen to an instant
noodle, nothing good can come
out of it, IMO.

Salmon Bento
Price : RM30.00++
Fred's order. Comes with
grilled salmon, raw salmon
slices, grilled dyed mini
octopus and the typical
salad and miso soup.
(To be updated)

Me, Jordan & Jia Yit
Another homo-erotic pose by me.
The little girl beside Jia Yit is
actually the sister of Ju-On.
Notice her bitter face filled
vengeance and grudge.
Careful. She might turn up
tonight and bite your dick off
while you're jerking off.

Tempura Maki
Price : RM12.00++
Fried tempura prawns wrapped
in sushi and cut into pieces.
Nothing special. But it was
good nonetheless.

Spicy Yakitori
Price : RM10.00++
Not as spicy as it looks, it
goes quite well with the
jap mayo sauce.

Egg Ramen?
Price : RM14.00++
Jia Yit ordered this. Looks
like some egg ramen.
According to Jia Yit, it was
nothing special. Not worth
it for its price, he says.
He would prefer to eat at
Sushi King.

Tempura Bento
Price : RM26.00++
Sam and his girlfriend ordered
this. According to Sam, the
bento was delicious. The
tempura part was crispy
while the others were fairly
tasty. The octopus was
hard to swallow though.

Salmon Skin Maki?
Price : RM12.00++
Fred ordered 2 of servings
for all of us. Firstly, I have
no idea what is it. Topped
with bonito flakes and jap
mayo, it has some canoe
stick and some fried salmon
skin(I think). It's pathetic.

Shumai
Price : RM10.00++
From top to down, each
pair belongs to Sam, Raggy
and Fred respectively. I lopped
them off and fried em.
Other than that, it taste
like minced pork balls. It was
nice. I like it.

Tom and Jerry.
The stupid waitress screwed up
my order. So I had to wait while
everyone was eating. And I saw
Tom & Jerry on the flat screen
tv......

Raggy and Me.
....took a homo-erotic pic with
Raggy. I think he's getting
aroused. Must be Fred's foot
fondling with his genitals
under the table.

Sam and his girlfriend.
My order hasn't arrive yet.
I'm getting pissed. Then I
notice Sam is back with his
girlfriend. I guess he
realized that the paper
was actually a ....paper.

Fried Garlic Rice with Beef

Price : RM20.00++
It says GARLIC rice on the menu. The rice taste like the jap fried rice at
Gurney Food Court. Not that it's not nice but it says garlic rice and I
don't taste garlic at all. And the beef taste like those packet food
my mother bought from the japanese grocery store. You know those
boxes with colourful packaging where you can pour out its content
n mix with hot water to eat? That's what I thought. It's quite nice if
you see it as japanese fried NON-GARLIC rice served with grocery store
beef packet. And I waited almost an hour for this. Fuck you, Takehana.

Takehana is one of those many places that has its food quality standardized

to feed on the growing demand and popularity of Japanese food among the
locals. It's like a carbon copy of Yataimura, serving limited assortment
of dishes and specializing on easy-to-make (easy-to-earn as well) ramen.
I am not fond of Yataimura, but I strongly recommend Yataimura over
Takehana. If you're wondering if the long wait for the garlic rice had
anything to do with this flaming, yes it does.

(*++ = there's a 10% service charge and 5% gov tax to each price)

Goh Huat Seng, Teo Chew Food

Last Thursday, we had the usual dinner-break from college and were faced
by the usual predicament of choosing a place to eat. The modern
commercialized food like nasi kandar, western food, fast food, japanese,
thai and hawkers were getting dull to the tongue.

We decided a switch to good old rice with dishes and ended up in Goh
Huat Seng, one of the oldest chinese food restaurants in Penang.
Located at Chulia Street, this none-air conditioned restaurant has been
running for generations. Famous for its teo chew food, it draws
customers from abroad as well.

The place.
Unlike your typical 'choo-char' or
'tai pai tong', this place comes
with plastic chairs and table
clothes, instead of metal
stools and tables.
No air condition though,
but it's breezy enough.

Weird old decoration.
The place is decorated with
old antiques like this giant
mirror here. And those
wooden plank with chinese
words. Alfred gets high
for unknown reasons
while Kenny stares blankly
into his own reflection..

Fish Fritters w Black Bean Sauce

Price: RM15++ (++ means estimation as I've forgotten the actual price)
Mildly fried fish slices cooked in tao cheong or black bean sauce.
It was good as you can taste slight spiciness from the red chilies as
well. Very appetizing with white rice. Fish was fresh too.

Chicken Saute with Assorted Vege
Price: RM10++
It was okay. The usual
saute taste. Nothing out
of ordinary. Has some
weird vegetable inside.
And it's a bit oily.

Fried Oyster in Black Bean Sauce
Price : RM15++
I am not a fan of oyster.
I had 2-3 servings and
that was enough. The
sauce is something like
the fish fritters, except
you get an extra oyster
taste to it. Alfred almost
cleaned the plate alone.

Stewed Pork Leg

Price : RM13
Yes, this is like 'Yim Tai' that you get from restaurants. Only in a
different style and cheaper. I can't say it's the best stewed pork leg I've
tasted, but this was very nicely prepared. No, the meat isn't stewed to
the extend that it melts in your mouth (You can only get those in KL),
but it was really good. Not too soft, not too tough, it's the best
you can ask for from a place like this. The sauce was a bit bland, but
it's the style. You can't complain about it. In fact, I like it. Very nice.

Overall, it was a good meal for me, finally another place that doesn't
have spicy or sour food in its menu. But that was until the bill came.
It was RM59.00+. Yeah, that's a near RM60 for you. 3 persons only.
No service charge or any other extra charges. It's RM20 per person.
You can dine in some semi-fancy jap restaurant with that kind of price.
It's ridiculously priced IMO but they wouldn't give a damn. They have been
in Penang for generations. But the food is 1 of a kind in Penang
(unless your family is Teo Chew and actually cook those food at home).
Expensive or not, it's up to you to decide. But I wouldn't mind going back
there again...once in a blue moon..for that pork leg. Oh yes, the pork
leg...Mmmm.

Fettes Park Western Food

By the time we went to Fettes Park, I was barely aware of anything that's
happening around me. I have been awake for 20 hours without sleep. Don't
ask me why, I do not know. Let's just call it sleeping disorder.

I reached there first. 2 meters away from my car, and it started to rain. In
less than 30 seconds, it became a downpour. I ran inside to wait for the rest.
Alfred arrived first, followed by Kenny then Sze Chie and Kiki. Kiki? No, don't

ask. I do not know her real name. But her boyfriend's definitely Lala.

I thought of taking pictures of them running soaked and wet. But the

blog's about food. So, too bad.

The place itself.
Located at the same place of Fatty
Loh's Chicken Rice, this western
food outlet is considered to be

1 of the more famous western
food stalls in Penang. There
are other stalls there as well,
but I couldn't be bothered.

Mushroom Soup
Price: RM2.50
Alfred and I ordered this. Taste
very bland. Something like

diluted Campbell's soup mixed
in a very big pot. And there's
that familiar taste you get from

it. The taste you get from Pizza
Hut, Careme's or any place that
cooks their soup in a big giant pot.

Potato Salad
Price : RM2.50/3.00
For that cheap price, it's as
close as you can get to a
japanese restaurant's potato
salad. It's really good if you
are into real potato flavour
without those overly sweet
mayo.

Fried Butter Fish
Price: RM7.50
It was average. You can find
this at any of other stalls.
What set it apart is the fresh

fish and the richly minced
onion tartar sauce which goes
smoothly with the fish.

Chicken Cordon Bleu
Price : RM7.50
I had no idea how it taste like.
I'm still new to this food
blogging thing. Didn't really
dare to try Kenny's share.
Looks large in size. Should
be worth while for its price.

Hawaiian Chicken
Price : RM??
Your average Hawaiian Chicken
with ham and pineapple. The
melted cheese on top should
set it apart other than the
usual. Oh, did I mention
the fish was fresh and the
tartar sauce was good?

Fettes Park Western Food is a long standing member of the 'elite' western
food stalls in Penang. Its dishes has survived through the years against
all competition and still manage its quality - fresh food, mild flavouring
and those minced onion tartar sauce!!

Four Leaves Cafe

I drove down to town to pickup Fred who came over from the mainland at the
jetty.
We would later meet a bunch of friends at night to see off Junjie who
was going
back to another state.

It was 2.30pm. The weather was extremely hot. 10 minutes later,we find
ourselves
at the Four Leaves Cafe at the Gama Complex for a late lunch.

Entrance.
The entrance of the place is located
beside the main entrance of the
complex itself.
From its look, one
can tell it's one of those many
localized 'cafes' serving the usual
local food with a higher price in
exchange for a better presentation
and yes, air
conditioned environment.

Interior.
Nothing in particular to point out
about the decor.

Fred.
Quite a nice shot, too bad the back
lighting spoiled the photo.

Me
This is my 5th shot. People around me
was starting to look.

Fried Garlic Rice w Spicy Chicken.

Price : RM6.90
It was today's special, so each of us had one of these. The rice is fried mildly
with garlic, it's not so heavy in the taste, but it's enough to make a decent
garlic rice. The chicken is fried and soaked with some spicy and sourish sauce.
Kinda goes well with the rice. Not too spicy but a bit sourish.

Hokkien Char
Price : RM6.90
Your typical Hokkien Char from the
hawkers served in a mini wok. It
tastes utterly average and it may
have more meat than a usual plate
from the hawker, but the whopping
price of RM6.90 do not do justice at
all.In addition to that, it comes with
some disgusting sauce.

Disgusting Sauce
(comes with Hokkien Char)
On the left would be soy sauce. On
the right would be disgusting sauce.
Common sense tells me it's sambal,
but after tasting it, it's disgusting
sauce to me.

Jelly / Agar-agar Thingy
Price : Free
I am not into jelly or agar-agar. So I
have no comment on it. After all, it is
free. Still, it looks like frozen urine to
me.

Overall, Four Leaves Cafe has been around for quite sometime. Its rice dishes
(fried rice + chicken, garlic rice, nasi lemak) are not bad and it only costs less
than RM10.00 to enjoy a no-sweat meal. However, keep away from the
western food and the hokkien char. They are just average. And yes, keep
away from the disgusting sauce as well.
