Johnny's Restaurant - Queensbay Mall

On Thursday (7th December), I went over to Queensbay Mall for the first
time with Alfred, Kenny and those 4 girls. What? Class?! Due to Operation
Schule Schwänzen, we had to go to Queensbay.

I was kinda starving when we reach there. So we spent time looking for
food once we reached there. They were several familiar food outlets. I
wouldn't want to come all the way to QueensBay and eat something that
I can find back at my area.

TGI Friday was in 'training session', so we decided to eat at Johnny's
Restaurant, given the name, we had the impression it was some
kind of western food restaurant.

The place
From far, it looks like some
restaurant serving meals at
above RM15.00.
There's like even a waiter
outside of the restaurant
to receive and guide people
in. Don Alfredo is on the far
right.

Me
I pose with the menu again.
Alfred is on the right while
Kenny is on my left. Tracie
helped took my photo.
Yes, the menu doesn't seems
western...

The actual food
Much to our surprised, the
place serve mainly Thai
Steamboat and some other
Thai food. Not in the mood
for steamboat, we ordered
the set meals.

Crap Drink
Another of those diluted crap
drink. It taste like water
mixed with salt. But it's
yellow in color and tastes
a bit bitter. So, I will
assume it's diluted urine.

Tom Yam
It may look diluted to you
but its taste is decent.
No complains for this. Quite
a decent bowl of tom yam.

Beef Rice
I ordered this. Looks horribly
plain to me for something
served in a place called
Johnny's Restaurant. And it was
very average. Nothing special.

Special Green Noodle
Alfred had this. I've forgotten
what the noodle was called.
Doesn't matter anyway cuz
it tastes like wantan mee.
So let's call it green wantan
mee.

Belacan Fried Rice
I've forgotten if it's Belacan
or Pineapple Fried Rice. I don't
see pineapples so I'll assume it's
belacan. 2 of the girls shared
this. I do not know which pair
but I don't see them saying
it's good. So I'll assume again
it's average.

Sambal/Spicy Fried Rice
Kenny had this. The other pair
had this as well. Surprisingly
this was not that bad. But
still nothing to wow about.

Water Chestnuts in Coconut Milk

Price : RM3-4
Aahh, this is my favourite Thai dessert. I didn't expect to find it here.
Pieces of water chestnuts are stuffed inside red jelly cubes served in
coconut milk. Although it could do better with some slices of fruits, the
dessert was nice. Lovely. Mmmm...I will write a more detailed explanation
about this dessert the next time i go to Yellow Light.

The set meals at Johnny's are at RM8.90 each. The meal comes with a
glass of crap drink, bowl of decent tomyam, so-so main dish and a scoop
of ice cream (which I forgot to take). If you look at one aspect, I think
it's one of the cheapest meal you can get at Queensbay. On the other
hand, you can increase your budget to RM12 or 15 and you will have
a wide range of better food choices.

To give the place the benefit of the doubt, maybe its tomyam steamboat
is way nicer compared to its counterpart. Yet again, it's just a maybe.
But at least the water chestnuts dessert was good. And they should
change it to Thaksin's Restaurant. Not Johnny's.

MAMA's Nyonya Food

The following day (5th December), I had nyonya food at MAMA's for dinner.
I'm not sure of its popularity but apparently a handful of 'famous' people
have dined at that place. You can check them out on the walls there.
Located on Abu Siti Lane, it's on the same lane of Informatics and FTZ.

Me
I pose again. This time I think
it's better than the previous
pose. In fact, it is better.
Oh god, it's so good I'm
falling in love with myself.
Oh, god, yes!! Oh, god,
yes!! Oh, yes!!

The Menu
My mother thought the menu
pose was silly, so I had to
take a picture of it separately.
Although, there's no reason
to do it but it's taken anyway.
Mmm..

Fried Anchovies with Onions
Price : RM4.50
It comes automatically as an
appetizer. The fried anchovies
are crispy served with soaked
onions, chillies in vinegar.
Not too sour, not too sweet.
Just nice. Yummy.

Perut Ikan
Price : Forgotten
I can't comment on this. I
don't take Perut Ikan. But I
don't hear my parents
complaining about it, so I
guess it should be decent.

Otak-otak
Price : Forgotten
Your standard otak-otak.
Nothing special to me.
Just the regular taste
you expect from an
otak-otak.

Petai with Sambal 'Heh Bee'
Price : Forgotten
'Heh Bee' is dried mini prawns.
The dish is slightly stir fried
and the petai is not over
cooked. Hence, it's a bit
raw and rich in its flavour.
As for the sambal, I've tasted
better, but it's not that bad
either.

Inchi Kabin(Nyonya Fried Chicken)
Price : Forgotten
This was a bit disappointing. It
was very lacking in flavour. I
guess the seasoning wasn't
enough.

Tao Yu Bak (Pork)
Price : Forgotten
The sauce was thick and starchy
to my liking. Flavour-wise, it's
decent, perhaps a little too
much pepper but it was fine
with me.

Ayam Ros
Price : Forgotten
Always unavailable or sold out
whenever I came, I was lucky
enough to eat this time. The
sauce is thick and cooked with
tumeric and other unknown
spices. IMO, it's better than
Hot Wok's.

Red Bean Porridge (Biko Moi)
Price : Forgotten
This is one of the best
red bean porridge I've
ever eaten. Its texture is
smooth and starchy at the
same time. It smells and taste
good. The coconut milk comes
separately. Very nice dessert.

When it comes to nyonya food, I reckon there are several aunties in Penang
that will claim they can cook better and have ultra super special recipes for
this and that. I believe them. In fact, why bother pay and eat outside while
you can eat at home and they even taste better?

Yeah, I agree. That is why from tomorrow onwards, I am going all over
Penang and eating all of their super special nyonya recipes. Oh wait, I
do not know them. They don't even know me. I don't even know where
to look. And why would they cook for a stranger?

I guess MAMA's would turn out fine. Sure, they may not serve super ultra
special recipe dishes(0r maybe they do) but for me, they are decent enough
for a fine meal of nyonya food.

(When I wrote this entry, 2 weeks plus has passed since I ate there. I've lost the receipt. So, I
couldn't remember the price)

Japan Cafe, Gurney Plaza

On Monday (4th of December), Jordan dropped by to watch Deja Vu. He
arrived at my place around noon and we headed to Gurney Plaza for a
quick lunch.

We ended up in Japan Cafe, located at the lower ground floor.

Me
Not my best pose. I'm not
photogenic. In real life,
I am 10000000x better
looking. In addition, I just
woke up. That's why I
forgot to take photos
of the shop.

Green Tea
One of the most diluted green
tea I've ever had. I understand
that I won't get good green tea
from these commercialized
jap food outlets, but at least
try to make an average green
tea. Yuck!!

Miso Soup
I rate it utterly average. Nothing
special. Nothing great. Oh, it has
no beancurd. Miso soup without
beancurd? yeap.

Cheese Rice
Jordan had this. It was quite
good according to him. Though
lacking in rice, its cheese was
enough to fill your stomach.
Recommended for cheese
lovers.

Beef Burger Rice with Cheese
This is the 3rd time I'm having
this. I just love the beef burger.
It is home made of course.
Though the burger is more
of like minced-beef stick
together, the flavour is all
good to my liking.
Yuumm...

Vanilla Pudding?
No idea. I'm not a fan of
pudding or jelly stuff. Tasted
like vanilla though.

You may have noticed by now that I didn't include any price tags on the food.
This is because I haven't been blogging for sometime and actually lost the
bill. But I will give a rough estimation of about RM15-18++ per meal.
Each meal comes with the tea, soup, main course and the dessert.

IMO, it's kind of overpriced for the quality of the food they are serving.
But they are in Gurney, so you can't really blame them..hahaha.

Food Loft, Gurney Plaza

Our final morning class ended early today. The weather was freaking hot
again and we were indecisive over where to eat as usual. Food Loft initially
was suggested. Considering the variety of food there and comfortability
of the place, we wasted no time.

Located on the 4th floor of Gurney Plaza, Food Loft calls itself a
concept restaurant and has a nice sea view over Gurney Drive. So,
what is this concept? Nothing much, you just walk over to the
kitchen area (vietnam, thai, malay, chinese, japanese, italian,
western kitchens) and order whatever you want with your assigned
card. Tell them your table number, and it will be served there.

The Interior
Very comfortable atmosphere. The
glim light from the outside just
adds to the ambience. It's stated
somewhere there's RM300'000 worth
of artwork in the restaurant to
impress. That's only true when I am
around. My face is worth around
that. And the chandelier sucks.

Giant Chicken Sausage
Price : RM13.90++
Large chicken dildo is lightly grilled
served with mild black pepper brown
sauce and mash potato.The yellow
sauce you see is cum, I mean mustard,
which I choked on and totally ruined
my dildo...sausage.I can't take
mustard. Other than that, it's nice.

California Maki
Price : RM4-5++
Alfred ordered this. The maki
looks decently prepared, unlike
some half-assed japanese
buffet. The price isn't that
expensive as well given the
place you are eating. So, it's
worth it.

Seafood Spaghetti
Price : RM17.90++
Jordan had this. I didn't get a
chance to try it but according
to him, it was not bad. Nothing
to wow about, it stays in the
border line of mediocrecy. The
clams however, was a bit over
cooked and was stiff.

Tempura Don
Price : RM14.90++
Alfred and I both had this. 2 prawns,
a couple of assorted vegetables
and some squid, the tempura don
was fried to crisp.The tempura
sauce lack of radish and there was
a strong wine taste to it. The dish
was a bit dry. Nonetheless, it is
better than a lot of places.

Char Grilled Chicken
Price :13.90++
Pretty much the same as my dildo,
I mean sausage. Just replace the
dildo+mustard with chicken + corn.

Food Loft may look fancy from the outside but in truth, the price and food
aren't that fancy at all. If you really take a deep look, the pricing is
almost the same with Nandos, Sushi King and those microwave heated
food at Kim Gary. Next time when you are undecided on what to eat
give Food Loft a thought.
Or when you are feeling to pay RM12++ on express food outlets, give
Food Loft a thought as well by just adding a few bucks to it.
The food is nothing to wow about, but it's not that bad either. The good
point is that the place is very nice to chill.
